JIKANKEI “FUJYO JIHOU” / 時間系不定時報
The Sun goes around on Spaceship Earth.

JIKANKEI is a software art. The word JIKANKEI is the time system, and FUJYO JIHOU is gradually changing time in Japanese. We are living in one of 24 local time zones by the modern universal system, also are involved in one global time on the Internet. JIKANKEI shows the sunrise, the sunset, and the sun direction times. This is a primitive time idea, but more personal. JIKANKEI does not express scientifically accurate data. It is only an artwork. Linger in the morning brightness, in the afternoon glow, and enjoy the gradually changing seasons on this globe. JIKANKEI is like fiction or poems. It is useless in this pursuit of a profitable computer society. I hope you will realize your standing place on this globe and feel the atmosphere of the Earth. The author makes no warranties to your physical and/or mental damages.

The basic idea of "JIKANKEI FUJYO JIHOU" is before Westernized Japanese Clock System (until 1873). Probably it was the most popular time system in the world. I believed your ancestors lived in a similar JIKANKEI time. I just did not know the histories well. FUJYO JIHOU divides daytime into six equal periods in which an angular unit to 30 degrees is measured along the celestial equator. When it is equinox one of the periods is almost two hours. However It is changed by seasons, summertime is longer and wintertime is shorter. Each divided points were named to the 6 directions of zodiac symbols in the day time and the 6 directions of symbols in the evening, such as U (卯: pronounced "wu" rabbit, the sunrise. six gongs: ake mutsu), TATSU (辰: dragon, 30 degrees from the sunrise / about two hours form the sunrise. five gongs), MI (巳: pronounced "me" snake, 60 degrees from the sunrise / about four hours from the sunrise. four gongs), and UMA (午: "wuma". horse, 90 degrees. noon. nine gongs), HITSUJI (未: sheep. 120 degrees. eight gongs), SARU (申: monkey. 150 degrees. seven gongs), TORI (酉: rooster. 180 degrees. six gongs: kure mutsu). JIKANKEI also shows one-twelfth of the daytime and one-twelfth of evening time for the understanding of differences between twenty-fourth even divided modern clock systems.

JIKANKEI displays angles of the Sun and local times of cities and places on the Earth. When the Sun transits on divided 30 degrees, JIKANKEI plays a signal of MIDI sound which is made by the text of Sun date of the places. Mac version shows a full screen of Google MAPS satellite images in the background.

JIKANKEI takes sunrise and sunset data of the specific place from US Naval Observatory Date Services by longitude and latitude through the Internet. The development of JIKANKEI was started in 2002. It had been suspended for some years for the Internet data problems. However, the development was restarted in September 2012.

How to set the accurate location by longitude and latitude.

1) Enlarge the "Longitude Latitude map" below. Make as large as you can where you like to set the location.
2) Click on the map and get the decimal number of Longitude and Latitude.
     If you know the address where you want to set, type it and click "Take Me!".
3) Copy and paste into Decimal Longitude and Decimal Latitude in the custom place setting.
4) Type the Place name where you like (you can see "Columbus Circle, New York, NY (Standard)" )
5) Set the map size (you can change the map size later).
6) Type the time zone hours (it is important. If you are in saving time zone, it changes. ).
     They may help when your are in saving time.

7) Click on "Set the Place" and close the custom place setting window.

MacOS only:
8) If the place is your default place, open custom place setting again.
9) Mark the check box of the "Default Place", and select the place. Select map size.
10) Click on "Close". The default place will be in the bottom of "Select Place" opetion menu.

Satellite Images (MacOS only):
Only Mac OS version can show a map image on a full screen.
When you like to see a clear satellite image, show all windows by expose and click on a satellite image (see below).
Show the top menu bar: Double click on the background. Hide menu bar: Double click on the bottom place name.

Version History

JIKANKEI development was stared in 2002. It was a kind of time or clock toy. The format of the present version (2.0) was made in 2007. However the sun data of US Naval Observatory Date Services were changed, then the software JIKANKEI did not work a while. The problem was fixed in September 2012 version 1.7.

1) Windows version is updated to the same functions as Mac OSX. This version of Windows shows a satellite image of Google MAPS (but cannot show it on a full screen), and makes SUN music (you have to install a free version of "Apple QuickTime").

Old History:
The project JIKANKEI (TimeToy or Time System in English) was started and participated in The First Free Biennial April, 2002. JIKANKEI is a Time browser collects and processes Internet Time data for an Art purpose. First version "The Beginning" was gathering various potential Time data for the purpose. And next “Chapter SUNDIAL JIKANKEI FUJYOU JIHOU” is the latest version.
Version 1.4.5 Bug fixed. 1. If you were in South Australia time zone(+9.5), the local date and time were wrong. 2. When a machine was in the last day of month, JIKANKEI could not get sunrise and sunset data of next day places .
